Choosing Beauty: Where do we go from here?

After having a rough first day at Blogher ‘08, I remembered authenticity and choice and on day two entered Beautiful Blogging and Positive Posting

The facilitator, Kyran Pittman, at Notes to Self began with framing the conversation:

…blogging is not just about ranting, and blogging is not just about raking it in. Blogging can also be about love, trust, positivity, hope, empowerment, quality over quantity, and transformations, global and personal. This session will give you some concrete examples of bloggers trying to contribute to their blogging communities, no matter the size or scope….

excerpt from live blogging at wannabehippie

She then introduced the amazing panelists:  Krystyn Heide at hoperevo.com , Jen at one plus two, Alyssa Royse at justcauseit.com and Lucrecer Braxton who started ArtSlam.  As women began sharing their experience of beauty and positivitiy, the room became electric with possibility.

The definition of beauty I heard was not based on denying challenging moments in life in the hopes that the hard stuff will just poof, disappear. Instead, many women shared their experience of adversity, personal pain or collective disappointment.  But rather than collapse under the pain or feed negativity, they each made a choice to respond in a positive way.  The form of the response looked different–from a photograph to a blog post to an organization–but the thread of intention was so palpable the room lit with heart-opening inspiration.

The session transformed from panelists speaking to an audience to a circle of people engaged in conversation about how the blogesphere can be an opportunity to express, connect and organize to celebrate beauty, choice, and service to others.

When Kyran commented that part of the issue came down to leadership the earth moved for me.  My spiritual training reminds me how important it is to respect lineage and honor teachers who carry lines of healing.  I’m not quite sure how to frame this in blog except to say that Jen Lemen, Jen and Rachelle’s Small is Beautiful , Carla’s Sacred Life Sunday and Darcy’s Spiritual Blog Reviews were my guides of trust and beauty as I offered up my blog virginity (during the session I was also reminded of Karen’s kind blog ).  I’m not saying these are the only resources of beauty in the blog world; they were the ones I discovered.

I wish to say thank you to these wonderful blog teachers who have offered leadership in paving the way for authentic beauty and positive posting.  I also wish to pose a larger question to whomever wants to listen:

Now what?

I don’t think there is one answer to this question and one need only explore the panelist’s contributions above to see how the blogesphere can be a forum of response.  As for me, I was the woman who felt the earth shake me out of my seat to pose the question:  How can we help everyone here connect more after today?  How do we help this way of beauty grow?  Immediately, Elaine at Wannabe Hippie offered to list interested blogs as part of her live blogging effort.  Thank you!!!

Over the last few days, I’ve read comments in various places from people saying they also believe in authentic beauty and positive posting.  That while we don’t deny it’s lovely when our blog resonates, we aren’t writing posts to increase stats.  We blog for different reasons but at the core, we blog because this is one way we make a difference, beginning from within.

I would like to extend the invitation to anyone who feels called to leave their blog name/address as a comment.  I’m no techie but I can make a list and post it as a page here for people who feel that their ways contribute towards creating a blogesphere that celebrates authentic beauty, positive posting, choice, and/or service to others.

I do this with knees trembling but with heart open, because if not now, when?

Thanks, Chani, for saying yes. It was the conversation you generated from your blog that was the inspiration for me to share this post. Thank you!

  3. Defiantmuse Says:

I was wondering if you were the woman sitting behind me at the panel on Beautiful Blogging. I had a feeling when I saw your blog, I don’t know why. I remember you raising your hand and being so passionate about everyone having a way to connect after the panel. I was glad you said it b/c although I was thinking the same thing I have this insane fear of speaking in front of people and I wouldn’t have said anything. So thank you for opening your mouth and opening your heart and all of the words you’ve shared here on your blog.

  4. stacibo Says:

  8. Lu Says:

Thank you so much for your kind words and for attending the panel. I am still floating from all the inspiration sitting in that room. I do believe Alyssa is going to carry this on somewhere on her website. You can not let energy like that go. Take care.

  9. stacibo Says:

Hi Lu, thanks so much for all you embody with your art.

I saw a comment from Alyssa on http://www.wannabehippie ( http://www.wannabehippie.com/blog/2008/7/19/beautiful-blogging-and-positive-posting.html#comments ) and went to her site to try to find an email to contact her. If she is planning on doing something FABULOUS. I kept noticing there seemed to be some interest from folks who weren’t at the conference and was inspired to include them any way I could.

  10. Olivia Says:

Yes, I’m in, too. I’m very glad I discovered your blog and share your sentiment. I, too came via Chani. Blessings, Olivia

    Hi Staci!

It’s so good to find the “beautiful blogging” conversation continuing here… I love that you’ve made the invitation, and am glad to have an opportunity to connect with others who share an orientation towards life, and see what we can do together. Meanwhile, I see there are some beautiful people gathered here in your comments field (and others you referred to in your post), and I look forward to exploring their work, too.

I’m at Beauty Dialogues at http://www.beautydialogues.com

  12. Hope Revolution spreads the positive energy beyond the intenet! It can be found at:

The panel also made me recognize that it’s been a very long time since I’ve allowed myself to be transparent and vulnerable on my own blog. I intend to start again August 1st, and I would love if you could come by and give me a virtual hug that day.

Chani sent me, too. :) Beauty is all around; is the strangest and oddest places that really aren’t so strange or so odd. The beauty in life feeds me and sustains me; I need it for when the dark is near–so I can remember and make choices that feed me, too. So I’m delighted to be here. Thanks for having me.

  14. Grace Says:

    Hi, Staci :)

One of the things that I personally believe contributes to Authentic Beauty is transparency. Coming here and reading about your experiences with blogging and BlogHer 08 was wonderfully transparent and immediately connected me to all you were saying. It takes a strong woman to admit that she doesn’t always have it all together (in the midst of her strong spirituality) and that kind of honesty is BEAUTIFUL.

It’s an honor to add to your conversation…thank you and NAMASTE, Staci!

  15. stacibo Says:

Grace, thank you for your generosity of spirit. You’re reflections, whether it be through one of your posts or in responding to/with a comment are a great source of wisdom. Welcome!

  16. Sage Says:

Making a mosaic of the shards I am given has been my life practice. This is why I write, why I blog, and why I so love traveling with you, dear Staci! Thank you for the invitation to speak for beauty, and to claim my place in the mosaic of this community! http://www.sagesaidso.typepad.com

  17. stacibo Says:

My dearest Sage, what an honor to welcome you to this growing community. Your support this past year, your insight and your writing genius is a bright life in my life. Woo Hoo!!! Welcome!
